Tis the Season. Merry Happy Ramadan Christmas Vodun Kwanzaa Hanukaa Festivus!!! :)

Holidays are upon us.

That we, reading this, have the luxury of celebration and remembrance and family, is a blessing. Many do not.

And we are stuck in the middle.

Time keeps on rolling… rolling… rolling… into the future.

Sorry bits of archaic, near forgotten song lyrics, stuck in my head. 🙂

Glad for so much here at the end of this cycle of days.

Here at the end of days, glad for so much.

But also aware of so much… that I should have made better.

We are almost a hundred years removed from the wonders and horrors of 1920, and almost a hundred removed from the wonders and horrors of 2120.

Here is hoping that in 2020, that our wonders transcend our horrors. That the places where we aspire, transcend the places where we tear down.

Speculative.

All speculative. All we have of any real import, is our pressure on the moment.

Is our will… applied.

Do we make a better world or a worse one.

Depends on you.

It ripples outward.

Intent.

Will.

No guarantees, but we fall down going forward… it matters. The intent transcends the fall.

Rambling.

Slightly.

All this to say… embrace… better. ‘Deliberate cruelty is not forgivable.’, Blanche DuBois said in A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE. We are all at times cruel, and petty, but I try to always remember that line, and not be.. cruel, or petty.

Because Tennessee Williams was right, right in his 1947 Pulitzer prize winning play, and right in the Elia Kazan, nearly x-rated for the time, 1951 Academy Award Winning movie… deliberate cruelty is not forgivable.

But it is avoidable and it is correctable.

Here at the end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020, with change like the stuff of science fiction upon us, we must hold to that one true thing… to aspire to better. To be better. And to spend less energy trying to make things (our phones, our tablets, our tv, our refrigerator, our voice operated Alexa assistants, our drones)… human, and more time making humans… humane.

God, whatever God or Gods you bend your knee to, bless you and yours, and give you the wisdom here at the figurative ending of days and at the beginning of a new cycle of days, to judge your wrongs… right.

Be well.

Thanks and Happy Holidays to the followers and supporters and visitors of this oft different blog on our pop culture and our times as seen thru an admitedly biased lens.

To paraphrase the great conversation between Joseph Cotton and Orson Welles characters in CITIZEN KANE (the product of 27yo wunderkind Orson Welles) :

Cotton: You know your problem, you want love on your own terms.

Welles: In the end those are the only terms anyone ever knows, their own.

This blog at its best is about things worth loving, on their own terms.

Thank you for a fantastic year of likes, comments, emails and suggestions, and of your own excellent content.

I am going to be shouting out all my followers (probably starting at the end of the day), from WAYLAND PROD of the excellent, and award winning podcast WE”RE ALIVE (https://www.werealive.com/) to one of the most talented people, writer, podcaster, reviewer DERRICK FERGUSON of the brilliant and must visit FERGUSON THEATER (https://derricklferguson.com) to THE GODLY CHIC of the always uplifting and rewarding GODLY CHICK DIARIES (https://gcdiaries.wordpress.com/) and every follower inbetween.

But I do want you guys to patronize some of the wonderful people who have patronized me over the years. Giving back and paying forward, I would like that to be how I end this two thousand and eighteenth year of a crucified lord, and begin the two thousand and nineteenth.

Happy Holidays to all of You!

Happy Holidays, Merry Mass of Christ and Improbable Heights

‘When you strip everything away from Batman, you are left with someone who doesn’t want to see anyone die.’ — KINGDOM COME by Alex Ross and Mark Waid

When I think of humanity in general, and the holiday season in particular it strikes me that that should be our goal. The pursuit of a world, where nobody dies in vain.

But the reality, particularly in America, this time of year is that with the eyes of the media diverted; government sponsored mass-murders actually ramp up, bombings ramp up (now of the drone and unmanned variety, machines murdering men.. what an unholy road we walk), the terrorism of the rich… ramps up.

I’ll not forget the media celebrating the death of Bin Laden. Death and Murder and Torture are never things to celebrate, no matter the justification.

While I am savage enough to know that killing may be a necessary evil, I am human and moral enough to know it is never a joy, never a victory, never a cause for celebration.

Be the murdered Bin Laden, or Hitler or insert bogieman here, bringing murder to murderers is never anything less than a soiling, and a failure, necessary though it may be, it is a failure of reason. And as such is a solemn time, not a glorious one.

Because to do otherwise, to take joy from death, and celebration from degradation and horror… is to devoid you of moral high-ground, is to make you (in ways stark and true) worse than those you would revile, worse than your Hitlers and Bin-Ladens. It makes you a lynchmob, a coward, and an opportunist of carnage.

We must strive to be better than that, otherwise your protestations of Christianity, and Holy Nights, and piety are just lies, are hypocrisy and mendacity most foul, that you use to conceal your roman desire to see people bleed and suffer and die.

You become that lowest form of life, a gibbering coward among cowards, you become nothing more than a grasping claw, a rolling eye, and a screeching mouth… in the creature we call lynchmob. And there is no lower, and ultimately, more inhuman form of life.

Our goal therefore must be to reject that, to reject the easy lies and the easy hates, and work toward this wildly improbable world where no one dies in vain.

But humanity’s very existence is an improbability, so we can bend that already fanciful existence to either improbable heights of good, or improbable depths of evil. We just have to pick a direction.

‘We do these things not because they are easy, but because they are hard. ‘ — John Fitzgerald Kennedy when imploring men into space

Here, on this holiday season, more fiction than fact, ‘goodwill to all’; look into yourself and find what is hypocrisy, what is lies, and find it in yourself to make truths, and truly believe and act on this idea…. of a time of peace.

Here endeth the lesson.

Holidays in December! or ‘Santa you gonna Pay what you owe!!!’

Rosa Parks Day Dec 1

National Day – United Arab Emirates Dec 2  – I have problems with Dubai, located in the United Arab Emirates. Mostly being that much of American tax dollars is funneled into this pleasure palace of the ultra rich. I think the rich are robbing from America, to set up a deluxe retreat from which they can sit out America’s fall. The fall they are pushing us to.

Anna’s Day Dec 9 – A Swedish holiday, celebrating people with the name Anna? That appears to be a good amount of the population. 🙂 .

Human Rights Day                                        Dec 10
Feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe             Dec 12
Winter Solstice & Yule Festival                Dec 21
Boxing Day Dec 26
Kwanzaa                                                            December 26 – January 1
Jose Rizal Day                                                 Dec 30

Wait— did I forget one? Oh yes—Christmas. The Mass of Christ- Dec 25

Here’s the thing about the Mass of Christ.

There is no evidence of the month or year of the birth of the person referred to as Christ. And indeed the modern construct of Christmas, is very much that… a construct. A product of crass commercialism, the date 25 December, having historically nothing to do with the figure of Christ.

What we do know is there was a celebration the Roman’s performed, on December 25th, to their pagan gods. That holiday would seem to be what we are, with television’s help, still celebrating, but have simply renamed their pagan god, with a christian appellation.

The truth of this, you can take, or you can leave alone.

If the holiday brings you a moment of true brotherhood that’s fine. But largely it’s not. Bombings and invasions of other countries by America’s Industrial War Complex tends to ramp up around the holiday seasons, while Americans are sidetracked stuffing their faces, and trying to buy things they can’t afford, and generally making lip service to a man of peace, while following men of war, into spreading blood and gore and death around the globe.

Merry Christmas. :).

My friend who is a huge Christmas fan could not disagree with me more. And that’s her right. If Christmas or anything brings you true joy, that’s fine. I’m all for it. I have no problem with ritual and myth.

I enjoy a midnight mass as well as a Buddhist temple or a Mosque or a Synagogue or a Vodun Temple. I enjoy anyplace where people genuinely seek something higher, something better, something sincerely sacred.

But make it something sincerely sacred.

Something without too much hypocrisy, and not built on mountains of lies and greed.

Don’t lose the meaning in the merchandising.

Happy Holidays, however you choose to meet the end of the year.

O Tidings of Comfort & Joy! Israel America and Dark Reichs

Oh, tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy.
Oh, tidings of comfort and joy.

I’m listening to old 70s Soul Cinema trailer clips, and they are cracking me up. The best? This little tag line from Fred Williamson’s BLACK CAESAR…

“This Caesar comes to bury you!”— How Frigging cool is that!I have to pick up that movie on DVD and watch it now. 🙂

God rest ye merry gentlemen,
Let nothing you dismay.
Remember Christ our savior
was born on Christmas day.
To save us all from Satan’s power
when we were gone astray.
Oh, tidings of comfort and joy,
comfort and joy.
Oh, tidings of comfort and joy.

The odd thing I find about Christmas, and this supposedly benevolent time of year, one of them, is it is typically the time America ramps up her military strikes against non-christian countries.

“Celebrating Ramadan with your families are you? Well let me drop off my present from Uncle Sam….
this megaton bomb bitches!! Merry Christmas MFers!!!”

I sadistically jest, but the truth is that sadistic without any jesting involved.

From God, our heavenly father,
A blessed angel came.
And unto certain shepherds,
Brought tidings of the same.
How that in Bethlehem was born,
The son of God by name.
Oh, tidings of comfort and joy,
comfort and joy.
Oh, tidings of comfort and joy.
Oh, tidings of comfort and joy.
Oh, tidings of comfort and joy.

I want to highly recommend a book I had mentioned picking up previously, DIGGING:THE AFRO-AMERICAN SOUL OF AMERICAN CLASSICAL MUSIC by Amiri Baraka.

A compilation of essays covering several decades of this uniquely American art form of Jazz/Blues as only an insider can, it is not only a seminal dissection of the times and the players in the music scene, it is as brilliant a dissection of America the American id and American fallacies as I’ve ever read.

It is an essential book, and is easily my recommended read of 2009.

It is a book on the masters of the medium, Trane, Coleman, Miles, the list goes on, told by someone who knew and played and laughed with them.

It is a book told with an authority, validity by one of not just the world’s preeminent poets but one of the world’s preeminent music lovers, and you’re NEVER going to get that again, EVER. By anyone.

Because those pioneers are all shuffled off this mortal coil, and what is left is the vultures to retrofit their memories and their music. The vultures who would paint Black Gods white.

We are now deep in the age of Sony and Time Warner and American Idol and corporate bs as the end all and be all of music.

Deep in the age of the tail wagging the people.

So the discussion DIGGING engages in, of the music as the gestalt, and the natural by product of the fears, the hopes, the politics, the loves, the controversies, and most of all as a chronicler from an abused mass of Americans not allowed to be Americans, this understanding of music as a call and a component in change, you are NEVER going to see presented from this capitalist controlled society again.

Music to them. the suits, is either a way to sell you something or to divert you from something, but never a way to engage you in something constructive or progressive or enlightening.

So DIGGING, written by this eight decade old LIVER and SURVIVOR and SHAPER of the most turbulent of American Years, I see as absolutely a historic document from day one, and an essential component to understanding what music was, and what it can be again.

You’re looking for a gift to give that music lover in your life? This is the book you give them. His list of recommended CDs alone is worth the price of the book!! I’ve tried some of his recommendations and they are dead on. Highest Recommendation.

“Jazz is the music of Americans who were not allowed to be American.”

To save us all from Satan’s power
When we were gone astray.
Oh, tidings of comfort and joy, joy.
Oh, tidings of comfort and joy.
Oh, tidings of comfort and joy.
Oh, tidings of comfort and joy.

I’ve followed the recent rash of removals of Black Mayors, from offices throughout the country, for the most trumped up nonsense with some interest. It is very Jim Crow like, and in the age of Black Newspapers and Black Radio Stations and even Black owned theaters… we would have called this convenient confluence of events what is it… a witch hunt, and a power grab, and a turning back the clock.

We would have called it clearly… injustice, and undemocratic, this usurping of the duly elected representatives of the people, by legal maneuverings of a very few people.

But we no longer live in an age of Black owned anything. Brown vs. Board of Education led the way to that.

Brown vs. BOE while a good case in the micro-level, on the macro-level can clearly be seen for what it is, a defeat cloaked as a victory. Zora Neale Hurston said this decades ago, and she was derided for it by everyone, Blacks as well as Whites.

She ended up dying a broken woman. But she was right, and no one has ever been more right.

“Our victories give them weapons they did not have before”

Separate but Equal, there is nothing wrong with that concept. The problem was the practice. America was never Separate AND Equal. It was alway seperate AND UNEQUAL. Inferior service, inferior representation, inferior choices.

And BROWN vs BOARD rather than treat the root cause of the problem, unequal and unjust allocation of dollars and resources, instead became a model for even more unequal allocation/distribution of resources.

That leads to our present atmosphere of disenfranchised people, devoid of real recourse or representation. With representatives picked off one by one, with not even a real Black owned paper or radio station left .

And you may be saying, I’m not Black why should I care?

You should care because

“what you do to the least, you do to to me”

or

“They came first for the Jews, but I wasn’t a Jew so I said nothing”

or

Because ultimately the crimes they, the robber barons of this… trifling age, get away with in Haiti or Iraq or Palestine or Philadelphia today, they are ultimately perfecting to try on you tomorrow.

Because while I’m fond of terms like Black and White, the truth is that this is a class struggle, between those who want to be, once again, their fathers’ sons and be the masters of men. And they will not let color deter them from your fall. They want the mass of men as slaves or serfs, and each peoples’ fall, from Liberia to Haiti to Iraq to Palestine brings them a step closer… to preparing your fall.

They are greasing America to fail, the agents of Oligarchy, they hope to put to bed, at last, even the lie of liberty.

So that the people, frustrated with services closing, taxes rising, food and water unsafe, quality health unaffordable, cost of living escalating, fear and crime their only constant food, and hunger and pestilence and perversion and death in the air, and America made into Gomorrah… so the people, frustrated, will be ready at last for their nation’s march to terror and totalitarianism.

Will be ready, at last, for America’s fall.

Mistakenly blaming their liberty for their pains, when it was not liberty that failed them, but they that failed their liberty by not killing the leaders that led them to such mire and such madness.

So remember this… rambling of mine from the edge… the next time you hear of a suspicious removal of an elected representative, or of an odd arrest, or a case tried in the press/tv, as many increasingly are.

Because with every broadcast, you are being manipulated closer to that day of your own dark Reich.

Ohhhh,
Oh, tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy.
Oh, tidings of comfort and joy.
Oh, tidings of comfort and joy.
Oh, tidings of comfort and joy.

Heroic Times takes on Christmas, Kwanzaa, Ramadan, Hanukkah and Vodun!

king
I was thinking about the winter Holidays recently. Ramadan, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, I’m in favor of all of them… to a point. Really. Any reason in this bloody world someone wants to celebrate as opposed to blowing something up, I’m all for it.

Of the ones listed above the two relatively fabricated ones are Christmas and Kwanzaa. Fabricated in the sense their observance, is relatively new and relatively arbitrary.

stampKwanzaa is a neat celebration. However, much of its concept and purpose hinges around the idea of a growing season. So in a tropical climate its December time frame may be valid, however transported to the cold and wintry countries of the West… it doesn’t make much sense. It would be more timely placed during the Spring, around Easter actually. So while a fan of Dr. Maulana Karenga’ s 40+ year old celebration, I think it is hurt by its rather forced placement in opposition to the religious holidays of the season. Again I would advocate a spring Kwanzaa, but in its defense there is no reason families couldn’t do its seven day process, in conjunction with their religious holiday.

Okay onto Christmas.

Christmas as we know it, is very much a 20th century fabrication (yes Rome—blah, blah, blah— but as we know it, it is very much a 20th century construct), that has incredibly little to do with religious timelines and dogma, and everything to do with creating a shopping frenzy for merchants.

What the eff does a fat white man in a red suit, climbing down chimneys have to do with a Jew crucified 2000 years ago?
lettersfromsanta
Answer? Not a whole lot.
[Brief aside. The fantastic picture above is from this site BAD SANTA . It’s great, take a look. Okay back to the article…]
The concept of Saint Nick is Germanic-pagan window dressing (And I have no problem with pagans) than anything having to do with Christianity. Same thing with the holiday of Easter, in the west… rather than Easter being about the resurrection, it becomes about painting eggs, and fat bunnies. This significant day, due to a culture of delusion and commerce becomes an excuse to sell chocolate bunnies, becomes devoid of its meaning.

I find the West (particularly America, who was at the heart of this commercialization of supposedly holy days) spends an inordinate amount of time raising their kids on utter bullshit. Santa Claus, Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy. And these kids are the same people who grow up… then go out ministering to the rest of the world on what is real and what is not. Delusions passed on like eye color, or prejudice. I have no problem with make believe, with fairy tales, but I don’t think it should be used in place of the facts, or fed to children as facts.

You want to read your kids THE WHOS DOWN IN WHOSVILLE, or THE THREE BEARS that’s fantastic. That’s great, that’s good parenting.

But telling your kid to put their tooth under their pillow, so some tooth fairy could turn it into money, or some fat dude is coming down their chimney to bring them presents… I have no frigging idea what that is about.

You want to tell your kid, an angel looks over him, and you believe that, then that is great.

But when you tell your kid, that a fat man is going to bring him presents, and you know perfectly well that’s bs… I don’t understand the purpose of that lie. Do you? Or is it just something you don’t question… an encoded lie, passed down like child abuse. Your parents did it to you, you do it to your kids, etc. Why isn’t it enough for the presents to come from the parents, for Christmas to be about Christ and a time of giving.

I don’t understand the American preoccupation, with deluding their young.

Fantasy is great, as a huge fan of fiction in all genres, I can say that. But don’t lie to your kids and call it a holiday. This is why Americans have a bad reputation throughout the world. Because we are raised on believing fairytales, from the cradle to the grave, and the rest of the world sees clearly through our delusions.

Biggest delusion?

“America is the greatest democratic nation in the world”

That’s because we’ve spent over 6 decades toppling nations that even look like they might remotely have a stable and potentially competing government. America has spent 60+ years keeping poor nations poor. And setting up bloody dictators. America maintains her crumbling fairytale of being a Democratic country (and I say this in the wake of a historic election) by butchering other nations.

That is not even open to debate. That is an absolute fact, that anyone who takes the time to look… can see. That is a fact, just as much as the presents under your Christmas tree comes from your loved ones.

But America is a society that raises delusional children who grow up to be delusional adults, who just transition from one set of unquestioned fairytales… to another.

So I’m not saying don’t celebrate Christmas, but I’m saying know what you are celebrating. Don’t say you’re a Christian and you’re celebrating Christmas if you have no clue what either of those terms mean. By all means celebrate the Mass of Christ if that’s what you believe, but don’t dilute and lose what you are celebrating. Don’t mistake the trappings of the holiday, for the heart of it.

“For I have that within
which passeth show
these but the trappings
and the suits of woe”
— From some hack called Shakespeare, and an okay play, called… Hamlet

Okay. So that’s me pimp slapping Christmas. Again I have no problem with any celebration of good, just the abuse of it.

hannukahfeatAnd of course Ramadan, Hanukkah, several Vodun or Voodoo religious observances around the winter months, are the real deal, and I won’t mouth off against any of them for fear of being turned into a giant chicken. (But seriously, here’s a great page on Vodun. I’ve spent most of my life sampling different religions, and have to admit to being relatively uninformed about VODUN. But I’m definitely interested in learning more.)

And if you guys think I’m hard on Christmas, check out this site LAST TRUMPET MINISTRIES. You’ll think twice before saying Merry Christmas. Seriously, having read his site, I think I wasn’t hard enough on Christmas. 🙂 .

Oh, and definitely check out this siteCHRIST, THE ETHIOPIAN. Wow, great stuff.

So now that we’re clear on my stance regarding being an equal opportunity celebrator, as long as you’re cooking something good, and no bsing children is involved, I’ll celebrate them all. So with that said next installment we go over gifts to give that loved one in your life, regardless what holiday they observe.

See you soon!
