6 Best and 3 Worst Free Channels/Apps on Amazon Fire!

I’ve been trying out the Amazon Fire lately.  It’s interface takes a bit of getting used to if you are used to the Roku, but for the most part is very navigation friendly.

It allows the easy install of the three must have paid channels, NETFLIX, AMAZON PRIME, and HULU; however it also offers a selection of excellent free channels. Not as extensive as Roku, but it has a solid selection.

So without further preamble, The best free apps/channels for Amazon Fire are:

  • CRACKLE – It’s selection can use updating, but offers a nice feature of being able to watch a show while searching their list of titles
  • TUBITV- arguably the best selection of content on any free channel, including notables not available on the paid channels
  • SNAGFILMS – It’s selection needs updating, but highligts  a few movies that may fall through the cracks of the other channels
  • For the most part the above channels are easy to load  and navigate, offer good content, and keep the ads to a minimum. Three things that the below apps/channels fail to do, and hence end up in our hall of shame.
  • YOUTUBE and VIMEO – convenient for staying abreast of movie trailers and finding short films and other hard to find content
  • PLUTO TV- The cable experience, without the cable price

The worst Amazon Fire Channels/Apps are:

  • KINO LORBER – Horrible navigation issues, mediocre content
  • GO INDIE TV – Navigation issues, and more mediocre content
  • SCREAMBOX – You’ll be screaming at what a waste of time this channel is. Lackluster content, poor navigation menu
  • COMICBOOKCAST2 – is basically a podcast with static pics, Not worth the time to download.

So there you go,  the best and worst channels on Amazon Fire. Feel free to comment with your picks for best and worst!

Fanfare for a Death Scene (1964) and best Cinematographers!!

Today’s recommended movie FANFARE FOR A DEATH SCENE (1964)

fanfare

This is a forgotten little 1964 made for TV movie, that sports the phenomenal camera work of the great Conrad L. Hall. The opening sequence alone is reason enough to view this film.

You can view the film courtesy of Amazon Prime.

Click here for Fanfare For A Death Scene

When it comes to the great camera men of cinema, Conrad Hall, in terms of bravura visual styling and seminal impact, is right up there with the best of cinematographers.

The best of them being Karl Freund (the father of cinematography in many ways, creating much of the visual techniques and language of cinema in ground breaking films such as METROPOLIS and DRACULA) Karl Struss (SUNSHINE) and Freddie Young (LAWRENCE OF ARABIA), James Wong Howe (SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS), Vilmos Zsigmond (two great collaborations with Robert Altman, IMAGES and THE LONG GOODBYE), Geoffrey Unsworth (2001, SUPER MAN), Bradford Young (MOTHER OF GEORGE, AIN’T THEM BODIES SAINTS, PAWN SACRIFICE, A MOST VIOLENT YEAR, SELMA), Guy Green (GREAT EXPECTATIONS), Lisa RInzler (MENACE II SOCIETY), Sergey Urusevskiy (I AM CUBA), John Alton (his wonderful collaborations with Anthony Mann, such as T-MEN, RAW DEAL), and Yoshio Miyajima (particularly with his collaborations with Masaki Kobayashi in films such as HARA KIRI and KWAIDAN).

Movie Trailers of the Day!

click for larger (if applicable) Trailer shows promise in this tale of cat and mouse.

The Hours Till Daylight (2015) I saw the first few images of this trailer, and turned it off. Because I was sold on seeing this immediately.

Camino (2015)The trailer plays a bit like THE WITNESS meets FIRST BLOOD. Definitely intriguing.

This THE WAVE (BOLGEN) Trailer made me go… Awesome. That’s pretty high praise for a trailer.

I watched the first thirty seconds of this trailer, and turned it off. Why? Because I knew this is a film I would be trying for myself. So much of what sepArates good genre movies from bad ones, is do you care about the characters?

Most genre fiction gravitates to the annoying or stupid kids who go exploring usually where they shouldn’t. This trailer in 30 seconds showed more depth to these characters than most genre films ever pack into a full movie. So yeah, I was immediately intrigued by the isolated THE THING like vibe.

All movie trailers courtesy of my new go to spot for watching trailers… Amazon Prime via Roku!

Movie and TV Shows to Binge Watch Before they Leave Netflix in Feb 2016!

81cdoPMK1GL._SL1500_

Every month movies and TV shows leave Netflix as their contracts expire. It’s one of the reasons Streaming is no replacement for having a hardcopy (DVD or Blu-Ray) of a movie or TV series you love, and want to have readily available.

So disappearing content is an unavoidable reality of Streaming. However this month is an especially impactful month for Netflix in terms of what is going away.

Among the notables are:

  • 18 Classic seasons of Doctor Who are leaving.
  • All 8 seasons of the modern Doctor Who are leaving. So last chance to enjoy the best of 50 years of Doctor Who.
  • You’re losing 4 seasons of the great JUSTICE LEAGUE animated series, helmed by the late, great Dwayne McDuffie.
  • YOUNG JUSTICE Season 1 of the Animated Series, One of the best Animated Shows since JUSTICE LEAGUE is departing

So that, is a bit chunk of quality programming leaving, so view it while you can.

Or do what I did and purchase the seasons worth having:

Doctor Who: Season 8 [Blu-ray]

Doctor Who – Season 3 [Blu-ray]

Doctor Who – Season 4 [Blu-ray]

Doctor Who: Genesis of the Daleks (Story 78)

Doctor Who: Complete Series 9 [Blu-ray]

Young Justice: The Complete First Season [Blu-ray]

Justice League Unlimited: The Complete Series [Blu-ray]

Currently Watching Movie : BONE TOMAHAWK

BONE TOMAHAWK– I’ve been looking forward to seeing this Horror Tinged Western starring Kurt Russell, since hearing about it way back in 2015 :). And finally seen courtesy of AMAZON PRIME I have to say, it does not dissapoint, it more than lives up to the hype, of being a great, gritty Western with some startling moments of horror.

The debut film of S. Craig Zahler is a tremendously engrossing, exciting, and brutal film. Highly Recommended. This is one I would love to purchase on DVD or Blu-Ray if it had a director’s or cast commentary. Unfortunately it doesn’t which means while a highly recommended viewing, I can’t recommend purchasing until theY release a better Blu-Ray. Grade: B+/A-.
