Inspirational Person/Youtube Video of the Day and Inspirational Person of 2019 : David Goggins

A year ago today, I did not know who David Goggins was, which says nothing at all about his well deserved fame, and a lot about how generally out of the world I am, in regards to any event or person who I do not figuratively trip over.

David Goggins, has been described as the man who the hardest men on the planet,  look at as an inspirational tale. And with good reason. I did a post a while back that links to some of the coverage that introduced me to him.

David Goggins is a man who does not suffer fools, and does not suffer excuses, and lives by a grinding work ethic, that makes the hard or difficult or grueling day most of us think we are dealing with, literally pale in comparison.

He is a man who to some extent ensconces himself in the miserable and suffering, to find what lies beyond.

He is a hard relentless man, for an oft hard relentless world.

But he cares, he cares.

By his own estimation he is a natural introvert, a natural stutterer, a challenged learner, a fat man, and by any estimation he has transcended all labels that was put on him by others or by himself. When most of us make excuses for our failings, David Goggins at some point, at many points, said no… no more.

In a world that loves mediocrity, David Goggins learned to loathe it with a passion and a response and a tenacity that can only be called… relentless. “No you are not Big Boned…. You are fat!!!” to paraphrase Goggins.

He can come off as a gruff and a brusque human, in his language, in his stance, in his relentlessness, but what is clear is that relentlessness is shield and armor… for a man who cares deeply for all of us, and our wars against mediocrity.

Spending ten hours calling your followers for the holidays? Who the eff does that??? Who subjects themselves to that??? David Goggins does. He doesn’t hold himself up as perfect, and he’s not asking you to be perfect. He is asking you to when you get kicked in the teeth, (which you will, it is what life does) to get up, and be harder to knock down next time.

The most inspirational person I know this year, who I do not really know, someone that is outside my circle of friends and family (who if we are lucky are the ones to most tangibly inspire us), hands down is David Goggins. His story and his videos this year taught me clearly something we allow ourselves to forget, that no one cares about the things we complain about, no one, and they should not, what people should care about is the things you spend time fixing. You are either a complainer or a problem solver, part of the problem or part of the solution.

David Goggins calls you to be part of the solution. Whatever your specific solution is. He welcomes you to the war.

The Great Pretenders : The Best Pre-JOKER ‘Non-Superhero’ SuperHero Films!

Way before Todd Phillip’s record breaking JOKER, other filmmakers were tackling very grounded stories of damaged people, transcending (or giving into) their damage in ways either heroic or horrific. Grounded takes that are eerily familiar to the fanciful origin stories more typically found in the comic books of yesteryear, but now moved into a darker world,, more akin to our own. Here then are the best of the pre-JOKER grounded films. One of them plays like the tale of the most bad-ass Robin, another an evil Super-Soldier Steve Rogers, another perhaps the origins of a demented Joker, or a sociopathic Bruce Wayne (the Jeff Wadlow directed TRUTH OR DARE is surprisingly good), and one a pre-Netflix prototype for Luke Cage.

I’ve recently become obsessed with Fencing.

So this short film was completely in my wheel house.

A great and inspirational little documentary.

RATING THE EPISODES : KOLCHAK THE NIGHT STALKER Best and Worst Episodes

Netflix On-Demand Classic TV: KOLCHAK THE NIGHT STALKER Best and Worst Episodes

THE SENTRY episode of KOLCHAK THE NIGHT STALKER, the last episode of the short lived series and some would argue the worst, is actually a tense, atmospheric, well paced episode. What sinks it is the laughable ‘monster’ creation.

The director does what he can to underplay the ludicrousness of the ‘monster’, showing it as little as possible. I don’t think anyone would argue the monster creation was anything other than a pathetic disappointment even by 1970s standards, that someone should have been fired for.

It is so bad it makes the bargain basement cardboard creatures of early Doctor Who look almost good. Star Darren McGavin rightly pulled the plug on this series when he saw the quality not just dipping, but plummeting.

All that said, despite the poor monster design, this particular episode still works, and is quite engaging and fast paced. As opposed to the oft praised VAMPIRE episode, which I find to be plodding. A solid GOOD, and one that using CGI to draw in a better monster could only help. Grade: C.

THE SPANISH MOSS MURDERS- This is Kolchak at his best, as this episodes mixes the cutting edge dream experimentation studies of the day, with supernatural monster lore, to create a bigfoot sized dream assassin. Quite enjoyable and fast paced. Grade: B/B+.

THE KNIGHTLY MURDERS – the opening to this one does not fill me with confidence. An out of focus suit of armor dispensing out of focus death. But with the appearance of John Dehner as an erudite and forlorn and quixotic Captain, the stock on this episode begins to rise. Add the great Hans Conried as the curator and it becomes just a fun, enjoyable, well-written episode. Really enjoyable. B/B+.

HORROR IN THE HEIGHTS – A very imaginative and smart episode. Add the murder of Jewish elderly, rats, swastikas, Hindu spirits, death that comes like a friend, and the myth of the end of the world, and you have a particularly compelling and enjoyable episode. Of all the monsters that Kolchak has faced this one may be the most insidious. B+.

VAMPIRE – Just a plodding, overrated episode. The only thing this episode has going for it is the very ending, with the audacious, and possibly inappropriate visuals of a cross burning and staking as the solution to Kolchak’s problem.

In fact watching this series all together there is a lot of questionable but reoccurring Nazi and Klan imagery throughout (swastikas in CHOPPED, HORROR IN THE HEIGHTS and burning crosses in VAMPIRE). Grade: D-.

CHOPPED – An incredibly fake looking headless horseman helms this poor man’s version of THE WILD ONE. Like VAMPIRE this is a plodding, boring episode. Another embarrassment of a monster design. Grade: D.
