Well with the paid streaming wars heating up, with heavy hitting players like Disney, Warner Brothers, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, CBS and tons more… all gearing up to, hot and heavy, fight for your streaming dollars; perhaps what is getting lost in the mix is the availability of quality FREE streaming options.
Here are some of the best and worst choices, for this, the 29th week of 2019.
Backed by big Sony money, a very nice interface (you can watch content while browsing) , and relatively quality content, often not availble on paid channels such as Netflix and Hulu. And it appears to not over do it, with ads.
This week’s worth watching are: LOOPER, The MARINE trilogy, THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS, AVP (Yes, I know it is supposed to be awful, but I have not seen it and am interested to. So being able to check it out for free… I call a plus. and just looking at the first few minutes, while writing this, it does not look bad. ), 7 SECONDS, AGAINST THE DARK (yes it is supposed to be bad, but martial arts meets an alien rip off. Yeah, I’ll watch that for free) and AFRO SAMURAI.
So yep, a great free Streaming Channel.
This one does not update its content too often, and generally has pretty old content you can get elsewhere. Exception first season of Lugosi’s THRILLER and all three seasons of MONSTERS and the movies WOLVES and THE GREAT ESCAPE. That content aside, this unfortunately is an under performing channel and needs to update/change its content more often.
This one has a ton of content, mostly older, and obscure straight to vod/dvd fodder. That said, while it takes digging, you’ll find the gems here unavailable elsewhere, as well as some newer content sprinkled about. However, more curated content, maybe 50 good options in each category, rather than a lot of questionable/awful ones, would help the quality rise above the noise. They also need to more routinely update/refresh their content. And playing ads, before the content even launches… is annoying.
Those negatives aside, there is a surprising amount of intriguing content available.
Some of interest this week, HOOD, ANOTHER ZERO, YUMA, THE GRAVE DANCERS, THE ILLUSIONIST, KILLING LAZARUS, TUCKER, REDHOOK SUMMER, TRUE CONFESSIONS, NIGHT CATCHES US, UNDERCOVERS, ROAD TO HELL, WEST OF HELL, MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN, ASTRO, THE HOLLOW, POWERLESS, THE POUGHKEEPSIE TAPES, BIBLE COLLECTION:GENESIS, ANTS ON A PLANE, FDR AMERICAN BADASS, THE MESSENGER, GHOSTS IN THE MACHINE, ARES 11, ROADKILL, BIGFOOT COUNTRY, MOST BEAUTIFUL ISLAND, TEXAS KILLING FIELDS, ANY BULLET WILL DO, THE LOST TREE, THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN, THE INCREDIBLE HULK, ALONE WE FIGHT, THE SAINT, BORDERLINE, LOVE AND BULLETS, BLUNT FORCE TRAUMA, LONE RANGER, SPOTLIGHT, THE TWO FACES OF JANUARY, BLOODY SUNDAY, SHAKE HANDS WITH THE DEVIL, DEPARTURES, METROPOLIS, A BAND CALLED DEATH, THE RECKONING, STARDUST MEMORIES, SHADOWS AND FOG, MYSTERY TEAM, THE GRAND DUEL, BRAZILIAN WESTERN, VALDEMAR LEGACY.
As the above paragraph shows, TUBI’s content is immense and eclectic.
I would argue that if you lost access or had to give up access to all paid streaming options, TUBI would be the best free alternative, to fill that streaming void. If they could only reduce their ad frequency and obtrusiveness, they would be more of a positive viewing experience. But still, clearly in the conversation, as one of the top 3 free streaming channels.
