$3.99 $2.59 Bitter Root Cvr D Williams 1 (Est ship date: 11/14)

(W) David Walker, Chuck Brown (A) Sanford Greene (CA) Brittney Williams In the 1920s, the Harlem Renaissance is in full swing, and only the Sangerye Family can save New York-and the world-from the supernatural forces threatening to destroy humanity. But the once-great family of monster hunters has been torn apart by tragedies and conflicting moral codes. The Sangerye Family must heal the wounds of the past and move beyond their differences… or sit back and watch a force of unimaginable evil ravage the human race. DAVID F. WALKER and SANFORD GREENE, the creative team of Power Man and Iron Fist, along with indie veteran CHUCK BROWN (Trench Coats, Cigarettes and Shotguns) bring you 24 action-packed pages of monsters, mayhem, and family dysfunction in a brand-new ongoing series. BITTER ROOT Cover As by SANFORD GREENE will be connecting through the first story arc.

As a fan of Ishmael Reed’s 1972 MUMBO JUMBO, which I consider one of the greatest novels and audio books (see links below), the 1920s was a time of pivotal and staggering change (as will be the 2020s),so to have this graphic novel BITTER ROOT set in this fertile period was already a good selling point for me. That it was the creator owned project of one of my favorite creative teams of the last few years, David Walker and Sanford Greene of POWER MAN & IRON FIST fame, made this a no-brainer of a purchase.

MUMBO JUMBO, if you are not familiar with it, is a very important and serious work under all its irreverance, wild fantasy and metafiction. The stepping off point is real characters, and real situations, to the point where the most fantastic parts are sometimes the true parts. Where wild imagination is sometimes neck and neck with documented history for what is most strange in that weird period called the roaring 20s.

‘Mumbo Jumbo is Ishmael Reed’s brilliantly satiric deconstruction of Western civilization, a racy and uproarious commentary on our society. In it, Reed, one of our preeminent Black authors, mixes portraits of historical figures and fictional characters with sound bites on subjects ranging from ragtime to Greek philosophy. Cited by literary critic Harold Bloom as one of the five hundred most significant books in the Western canon, Mumbo Jumbo is a trenchant and often biting look at black-white relations throughout history, from a keen observer of our culture. ‘

And while I am not expecting anything as deep or scholarly as Reed’s MUMBO JUMBO, still to see David Walker and Sanford Greene’s BITTER ROOT likewise set in such a fertile period, just has me eager for their 1920s concoction. Preorder it via LONESTAR COMICS (thevlink below) and you will only pay the low price of $2.59 to get the first issue. A 35% savings off the $3.99 cover price.

Other recommended purchases/preorders this month are OUTER DARK #1, ELIZABETH DUMN AGAINST THE DEVIL IN SUITS ONE SHOT. WARNING #1, and 24 PANELS Benefit TPB.

Come back next installment as we recommend what to buy from the other publishers.
