Week 1 of 2018 Best CD : Darius Rucker CHARLESTON, SC 1966

Charleston, SC 1966

Been spending the first week of 2018 listening to this 2010 Sophomore effort from Darius Rucker, former front-man for HOOTIE AND THE BLOWFISH. Of the many albums he has released since going solo, Rucker’s CHARLESTON SC 1966 is one of his best. Brilliant from first song to last, I listen to it all the way thru, repeatedly, and have yet to tire of it or hit a song I don’t love.

In a time when the bad, intolerant aspects of the south and country music are unfortunately too often the most vocal representatives of that region, especially given the hate-mongering and idiocy of the Trump fiasco… it is nice to be able to point to the better. Darius Rucker is that better, and his songs are not just a palliative to diseased times, but potentially a curative, healing agent.

Darius Rucker on the CD, and a Percival Everett book to read. That combination is a year… well started.

THIS Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Got a baby girl sleeping in my bedroom
And her mama laughing in my arms
There’s the sound of rain on the rooftop
And the game’s about to start

[Verse 2]
I don’t really know how I got here
But I’m sure glad that I did
And it’s crazy to think that one little thing
Could’ve changed all of it

Maybe it didn’t turn out like I planned
Maybe that’s why I’m such, such a lucky man

[Chorus]
For every stoplight I didn’t make
Every chance I did or I didn’t take
All the nights I went too far
All the girls that broke my heart
All the doors that I had to close
All the things I knew but I didn’t know
Thank God for all I missed
Cause it led me here to
This

[Verse 3]
Like the girl that I loved in high school
Who said she could do better
Or that college I wanted to go to
Till I got that letter

[Verse 4]
All the fights and the tears and the heartache
I thought I’d never get through
And the moment I almost gave up
All lead me here to you

I didn’t understand it way back when
But sitting here right now it all makes perfect sense

[Chorus]
For every stoplight I didn’t make
Every chance I did or I didn’t take
All the nights I went too far
All the girls that broke my heart
All the doors that I had to close
All the things I knew but I didn’t know
Thank God for all I missed
Cause it led me here to this

[Bridge]
How I cried when my mama passed away
But now I’ve got an angel looking out for me today
So nothing’s a mistake

[Chorus]
For every stoplight I didn’t make
Every chance I did or I didn’t take
All the nights I went too far
All the girls that broke my heart
All the doors that I had to close
All the things I knew but I didn’t know
Thank God for all I missed
Cause it led me here to this

[Outro]
It led me here to
This
