I am finally finishing up season 1 of HEMLOCK GROVE and after some uneven middle episodes it ends strong.
Episode #2 has a fantastic transformation scene that you wait the whole season to get more of. It finally comes in episode #12 with a doozy of a cliffhanger. Though a largely scattershot, confused and incomprehensible “make it up as you go” episode #13, ends the season on a sour note.
But despite its flaws, HEMLOCK GROVE when it works is imaginative, intriguing, sexy, bloody, strange, and alternately silly and intoxicating. Mixing the gothic soap-opera shenanigans of DARK SHADOWS and the dysfunctional monster mash-up group dynamics of the ADAMS FAMILY, it’s at least worth a look.
