2014 Best and Worst Films on NetFlix Streaming! PT 1 OF 3

2014 Best and Worst Films on NetFlix Streaming! UNDER CONSTRUCTION

    BEST

Let’s start with the best, movies so good that after seeing them on Netflix I had to own them with commentaries and special features in the best quality possible. So along with the title of the movie I’ve listed the recommended DVD or Blu-Ray version you should own.

DIRTY MARY CRAZY LARRY- An American classic
ARROW (CW series)
HOUSE OF CARDS (Netflix Series)
SUPERNATURAL (CW Series)
LONGMIRE (Series)
EUROPA REPORT
3 DAYS TO KILL
THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK
PONTYPOOL
AMERICAN HORROR STORY Season 2
BURN NOTICE (All seasons)
IP MAN
IP MAN 2
THE HORDE
THE STRANGE COLOR OF YOUR BODY’S TEARS

THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL- Ti West has a few films available on Netflix, this is the only one that is a home-run. The others are various grades of bland and disappointing.

THE POSSESSION- One of the stronger possessed objects films, with a good cast. This one is worth watching more than once.

DON’T BLINK- Starts off un-impressively, like any number of poorly written, annoyingly cast “let’s go to the woods for the weekend” horror films, but quickly distinguishes itself as far weirder, far more intriguing, and far smarter and more interesting. You’ll either hate the ending or love it, I’m squarely in the love-it camp.
METRO MANILLA
ULTRASONIC- Not a great film but is a compelling one. I can see myself returning to this one.
GRAND PIANO

    AVERAGE TO ABOVE AVERAGE

These are films you don’t necessarily want to rewatch, so aren’t good enough to warrant getting the DVD or BLU-Ray, but are a pleasant enough diversion while you’re watching.

THE HAUNT-This haunted house story is nothing you haven’t seen before, but it is done better than the vast majority of such movies. With actors who you actually like, giving compelling performances, creating a storyline worth following to the end. And it’s competently directed with a few effective moments of eeriness.
PARANORMAL ACTIVITY : MARKED ONES – One of the stronger entries in the Paranormal Activity franchise. This one brings some Latin vibe to the, to this point, WASP only series. Combining a bit of CHRONICLE, and moments of unexpected action, it is right up there with the strongest films of the series (1st and third entries in the series).
THE HAUNTING OF HELENA- Has its moments, and some early beautiful photography, but overall is a dissatisfying vengeful spirit flick. Worth a look if nothing else is on, but otherwise this one can be safely avoided.
DEVIL- Worth a look, but ultimately pretty sub-par
THE TAKING OF DEBORAH LOGAN- Alzheimer meets possession. It goes off the rails in the final act, and is overlong in getting there but has some solid moments along the way.
THE CALLER- Took me a few attempts to get all the way through this one. A unique premise makes this one worth getting to the ending. That said its a rather bleak ending, leaves one with a bad after-taste. Worth a look, but not one worth revisiting.
ALMOST HUMAN
BREAKING BAD- All 5 seasons. By season 5 I felt the show was running on fumes. A series with a great beginning, some great moments, but didn’t quite stick the landing.
IRONCLAD
THE HUNTED
MAN OF TAI CHI
DREAM HOUSE (2011)
ROCKETEER (1991)
SNOWPIERCER
THE BIG BAD- Little Red Riding Hood meets EVIL DEAD
HIGHLANDER ENDGAME – a mess of a movie bordering on farce
BENEATH- One of the better trapped in a haunted mine movies

    WORST

These are movies that are so inept or poorly made or unsatisfying that watching them is a waste of time, and Netflix should dump them and replace them with films more deserving of the space.

DEVIL SEED(2012)
DEVIL’s PASS
PARANORMAL ASYLUM- tedious
MR. JONES
THE WARD
MINE GAMES
HOLD YOUR BREATH
THE DAMNED
THE GRUDGE 3- Laughably incompetent. The director should be ashamed to have his name on this ineptly directed, edited, and paced waste of time.
DARK TOUCH-One house tormenting kid movie too many
EXIT TO HELL

IIN FEAR
