Song of the Day AS by Stevie Wonder

Songs in the Key of Life

As around the sun the earth knows she’s revolving
And the rose buds know to bloom in early May
Just as hate knows love’s the cure
you can rest your mind assure
That I’ll be loving you always

As now can’t reveal the mystery of tomorrow
But in passing we’ll grow older every day
Just as all that’s born is new
you know what I say is true
That I’ll be loving you always

Until the rainbow burns the stars out in the sky,
always
Until the ocean covers every mountain high,
always
Until the dolphin flies and parrots live at sea,
always
Until we dream of life and life becomes a dream

Did you know true love asks for nothing
And acceptance is the way we pay?
Did you know life has given love a guarantee
To last through forever and another day?

Just as time knew to move on since the beginning
And the seasons know exactly when to change
Just as kindness knows no shame
know through all your joy and pain
That I’ll be loving you always

Until the day is night and night becomes the day,
always
Until the trees and seas just up and fly away,
always
Until the day that 8x8x8 is 4,
always
Until the day that is the day that are no more
As today I know I’m living,
but tomorrow Could make me the past,
but that I mustn’t fear
For I know deep in my mind
the love of me I’ve left behind
‘Cause I’ll be loving you always

Until the rainbow burns the stars out in the sky,
always
Until the ocean covers every mountain high,
always
Until the dolphin flies and parrots live at sea,
always
Until we dream of life and life becomes a dream

We all know sometimes life’s hates and troubles
Can make you wish you were born in another time and space
But you can bet your life times that and twice its double
That God knew right where He wanted you to be placed

Until the day is night and night becomes the day,
always
Until the trees and seas just up and fly away,
always
Until the day that 8x8x8 is 4,
always
Until the day that is the day that are no more
Always

—The song AS from the album IN THE KEY OF LIFE by Stevie Wonder.

The thing I think is lost in this download generation is just how much the album art and liner notes were part of the musical experience. Part and parcel of the discovery. Even with CDs you got the booklets and liner notes, but you do lose something in this push toward the… ephemeral.

The Itunes model is successful, I just don’t know if it’s right.

I wonder what we lose, in this mad rush… to the next thing.

When I was young, when the stars were still warm, and the future… looked a thing of endless hope and heroism, there were simple joys, of friends opening up a new album, digging the art, transported by the music, and learning the liner notes and lyrics.

It was the process, the communal nature of it as much as the music itself. In this ephemeral age, this digital age, I think some of that is lost, we don’t stay on any one thing long enough… to know it.

Really know it.

No time you see. The irony of more, is that sometimes we… experience, truly experience… less.

Less in terms of the digital delivery method which is, whether mp3 or mov or flv, always a compromise, a reduction, a bastardization to some extent of the true way that item was designed to be presented, but also less in terms of a more qualitative nature of our ability to move and be moved, in constantly moving times.

So the benefit of digital, and downloadable delivery is you can sample and experience a great variety quickly. That’s wonderful, that is brilliant. But once you find something that grabs you, speaks to you, I like having the tactile product, the CD, the LP, the art, the effort, the presentation.

I like having… the moment.
