YES! I KNOW I’VE ABSOLUTELY ABANDONED COMIC REVIEWS!
It’s just that I’m way on this film kick right now. And man have I seen some good films recently!
LA MALA ORDINA by Fernando Di Leo. The RAROVIDEO DVD LABEL produces some high quality flicks! And Fernando Di Leo’s LA MALA ORDINA is one of their best.
DESCENT ORIGINAL UNRATED CUT- This film directed by Neil Marshall is magnitudes of power better than his earlier (in my opinion awful) DOG SOLDIERS. The DESCENT is visually, cinematically, and most importantly, storywise… riveting. And unlike so many flicks that have the stylish look of SEVEN, but lack the heart or humanity or heroism of that flick, flicks that are really nothing more than slick sadism (cough…cough… DEVIL’S REJECTS… cough); DESCENT gets it right. And the commentaries on the special edition, are must listens!
Another relatively new DVD label, that is producing some of my favorite DVDs is NOSHAME. These guys are releasing long out of print, only available in low quality bootlegs, cult Italian Giallo and Poliziotteschi, finally in great remasterd versions, with tons of great extras!
From this label I own:
EMERGENCY SQUAD and CONVOY BUSTERS, two wonderful, oddly thoughtful and laconic police thrillers, in a genre not known for its subtlety, Both directed by Stelvio Massi, and both starring larger than life, iconic, leading men of the genre. And as good as both films are, the extras make them absolutely indespensible buys, for fans of the genre. The interviews that NOSHAME has compiled are absolute gems, part of too long overlooked film history. Recommended.
FILMS TO GET BY UMBERTO LENZI
SO SWEET SO PERVERSE
I heard a lot of praise for the PROPOSITION, an Australian western written by Nick Cave, with music by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. An okay movie, but I found it ultimately to be pretty underwhelming.
